Sumack

Sumack (Soumack)Sumac

Sumack is a type of kilim that is made in a special way to create a more durable and shaggy appearance.

Sumack is originally made in the western part of Iran by tribes called Shahsavan and is mostly made by women as a source of income for the family.

Sumack is made by local wools and natural dyes and this will enhance both the beauty and the strength.

Warps are mostly wool or silk and wefts are wool, cotton or silk.

Sumack and kilim are both woven rather than having knots, however there is a difference between them: sumack is embroidered and its embroidery threads are not cut off at the back so it has a shaggy, erratic collection of loose ends or strands of wool. The wefts strands are threaded through a number of warp strands and then looped back.

Sumack usually has geometric designs with tribal motifs (like small birds) all around.

Today, sumack is an important decorative part of homes and offices with a modern atmosphere.
